You are required to stand on a narrow beam, do some backflips and cartwheels, all the while remaining perfectly balanced, and then make a soft, balanced landing. But you're scared because a teammate injured himself due to faulty equipment.

An athlete must truly believe in his heart and mind that he can perform his moves flawlessly and smoothly. You don't have to be an athlete to know that you're not confident of going on a trip if your bike's gears are a little loose, or that the brakes keep slipping on your motorcycle.

In anything we do, whether in sports or in life, we need to make sure that the equipment and tools we use will function correctly and not break down when we need it the most. Just ask any airplane pilot. They make it their duty to examine their gear and the plane's equipment before each and every trip. They inspect and double-check each piece of equipment before flight. They do it habitually and regularly, because they know that people's lives are at stake and they have to depend not only on their skills as pilots, but on the reliability of the plane and the flight equipment itself.
