What to Do During a Herpes Outbreak

by Jessica C

Although herpes is generally not a dangerous condition, you probably know by now that it can be very uncomfortable! One of the first things you should remember is that you need to avoid sexual contact during the herpes outbreak.

Delay until there isn't a single trace of your blisters. That means you've waited for the scabs to fall off and for new skin to grow in their place. And in the meantime, there are lots of things you can do to help diminish the discomfort. A good first step is to use an ice pack. The cold ice will ease the pain and reduce the swelling that comes with genital herpes.

Next, try a warm bath with baking soda. Baking soda is great because it can help with the pain and reduce all the annoying itching, too. When you're done with your bath, be sure you dry yourself carefully and thoroughly. You'll reduce the uncomfortable symptoms by keeping the affected areas clean and dry.

To help retard the viral growth during a herpes outbreak, try taking some natural supplements. An amino acid like L-lysine, or other antioxidants such as zinc, can help slow down the viral growth.

At the same time, avoid eating foods that suppress L-lysine, such as nuts, dairy products, meat, seeds, oats, and corn. That doesn't leave you with a lot of choices, true, but it sure beats a protracted, itchy outbreak!

Immune supplements, such as Echinacea, goldenseal, and vitamin C will help speed healing, as well. But remember, if you're allergic to ragweed, avoid Echinacea! Keep in mind that the most natural and effective immune boosters include sleep and reduced stress.

Treat your blisters with a topical solution. Tea tree oil is a natural topical antiseptic that can be used several times every day, at full or half strength.

If none of these natural approaches helps to get your herpes outbreak under control, get in touch with your doctor. Your doctor can prescribe one of many medications available today that can relieve your symptoms.

Just remember that there isn't a single treatment that can cure herpes, nor can they prevent the disease from spreading. That goes for natural and pharmaceutical remedies. You can even spread this disease through oral sex, so protect your partner, take care of yourself, and wait for a while!
