Plus Size Clothing And The Fashion Industry

by Andrea Dilea

Most models and fashion designers are not people who are touched by obesity. There are many people in the general population that struggle with their weight and need to purchase clothing in larger and larger sizes. It is time for the fashion designer and the industry as a whole to look into this growing need.

The obesity epidemic is impossible to ignore. In fact, over half of all women are either overweight or obese. And for middle-aged women, almost two-thirds are overweight. Obesity is running rampant in teenagers as well. These consumers want attractive, quality fashions and because of this growing population segment, the demand for clothing plus size and larger is increasing.

In fact, the fastest growing segment in the fashion business is plus size clothing. Amazingly though, the industry has not fully met the demand. Plus size clothing tends to be behind the latest fashion trends. The styles that are available tend to simply be larger versions of clothes designed for smaller sizes instead of specifically targeting the needs and forms of plus size women.

The fashion industry has responded with what has been defined as size inflation. Basically, clothing size numbers have shifted. For example, a size 10 today may be the equivalent of a size 14 from several years ago. Consumers then have the illusion of being a smaller size than they really are but what results is dissatisfaction in the plus size fashion segment.

There have been some recent encouraging changes. An American led consortium of plus size clothing manufactures has recently completed the most extensive sizing study of women since the Second World War, so that new designs will better fit today's women There are even some plus sized models and plus size only fashion shows, but these remain in the minority.

The obesity epidemic does not seem to be retreating. In fact, it is forecast that in the future there will be even more overweight people. The fashion industry is aware of this trend in sizing but is not reacting by targeting this segment. Instead of plus size clothing being a specialty market, it instead is becoming the standard to which consumers turn. With such a large customer base, fashion designers should zero in on the special needs and wants of overweight customers.
