Improve Your Skin Tone and Reduce Age Spots - Liver Spots - Lentigines.

Skin color tone balanced & tissues revitalized

Few things can damage the skin's natural appearance as much as cumulative sun exposure that shows up as unsightly dark spots and uneven skin tone and tend to accentuate over time (also called hyperpigmentation; age, sun, solar, or liver spots; or solar lentigines; or discoloration).

Fortunately hyperpigmentation can actually be treated successfully, safely and naturally, resulting in an overall healthier and younger looking and beautiful complexion. Fading dark spots requires a sustained approach during several weeks while pigment production goes back to normal levels and the superficial hyperpigmented cells are replaced by new cells, but the results will be worth the time investment.

Sun exposure stimulates pigment production, so don't expose your skin to the sun while you are trying to fade dark areas.

BIOSKINREJUVENATION helps moisturize, protect and preserve healthy skin, while gradually reducing existing blotchy skin, age spots and sun hyperpigmentation.

The active ingredients remove unevenly pigmented skin cells that are stuck on the skin's surface and inhibit further pigmentation.

The product also combats skin-aging free radicals and speeds healthy skin turnover and skin regeneration.

The cream includes the same ingredients as in BIOSKINCARE so that they replenish the skin barrier plus two additional ingredients:

1.- a human growth factor peptide, (nonapeptide 1) derived from the melanocyte-stimulating-hormone (MSH). It blocks melanin synthesis and reduces the formation of unwanted pigmentation, allowing control over skin tone and brown spots.

Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone (MSH) is a peptide hormone produced by the pituitary gland. When your body is exposed to sunlight MSH is produced to stimulate production and release of melanin (melanogenesis) by melanocytes in skin and hair.

The ingredient in the cream is a biomimetic peptide that takes the place of the natural ligand (alpha-MSH) on its specific receptor (MC1-R) and then blocks the melanin synthesis.

Peptides are made up of individual amino acids that are linked together like a pearl necklace. These are differentiated into oligopeptides (2-10 amino acids) and polypeptides (10-100 amino acids).

Biomimetic peptides are identical to the skin's peptides. They act on the physiological mechanisms of the skin with a high specificity. Oligopeptides and polypeptides fulfill important tasks as hormones (peptide hormone) or as neurotransmitters or neuromodulators (neuropeptides).

Skin pigmentation and tanning are related to the amount and distribution of melanin in epidermal melanosomes. The epidermis cell population includes keratinocytes and the melanocytes that supply the keratinocytes with melanosomes, i.e., melanin containing pigment granules, via dendritic processes.

Melanin is a dark pigment that is produced by the oxidation of tyrosine to dopa and dopaquinone by the enzyme tyrosinase, to produce compounds that polymerize to form melanin.

2.- an ingredient that inhibits tyrosinase enzyme activity derived from plants that are native to the northern Canadian prairie region. Rumex extracts are included which are capable of inhibiting the production of the enzyme tyrosinase, leading to clearer complexion and a reduction in skin pigmentation. They do this by limiting both melanin production (tan) and skin reddening (erythema). Visible signs of color reduction in age spots are observed after 3 weeks.

What Causes Hyper Pigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation occurs when patches of skin become darker than the surrounding areas. This occurs wherever melanin pigments have accumulated on your skin due to hormonal imbalances, inflammation, and the defense reaction of your skin to excess solar exposure.

Most people don't have to worry about age spots until they're nearing the age of 40. If you're young, you should begin preventive measures to prevent them from appearing later on. Age spots aren't dangerous but they can be unsightly. If they're already becoming visible, there are a few things you can do, though there is no quick cure.

The most important thing you can do is to protect your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays. Reduce exposure when possible and wear a sunscreen that has a SPF of at least 15. Wear hats when outside and cover up with clothing when it's practical to do so. Remember, though reduced, the sun's rays also penetrate your skin when it's cloudy.

Whatever form of hyper pigmentation you may have, you must remember that exposing unevenly pigmented skin to the sun can only make problems worse. Freckles, age spots or melasma only become darker or larger. What happens is that melanin absorbs ultraviolet rays in order to protect the skin. Usually, this process is called tanning, but in the case of hyperpigmentation, it can cause any dark patches to become even darker.

So, wear plenty of broad spectrum sunblock (broad spectrum means that the SPF lotion can block both UVA and UVB). It might be too late for prevention but it's never too late to care.

Melasma or chloasma spots look almost identical with age spots but they are larger and are caused by hormonal changes. You can get them on your face (temples and forehead), chest or abdomen, depending on what causes hyper pigmentation. Melasma appears most often because of hormonal changes (pregnancy or birth control pills, for example) and disappears after child birth or once you stop the birth control treatment.

Freckles are also signs of uneven skin pigmentation and can appear anywhere on the body, especially on the face, cleavage and hands. Freckles are usually inherited from parents.

Some forms of skin hyperpigmentation may be the result of acne or other skin conditions that could leave colored marks on the skin after healing. Cosmetic surgery, burns or injuries can also cause hyperpigmentation.
Another cause of hyperpigmentation may be drug treatment with amiodarone, tetracycline, minocycline, bleomycin, cyclophosphamide, chloroquine and quinacrine. If you have a history of taking any of these drugs and have uneven skin tone, it would be best to see a dermatologist.

NOTE: According to popular belief, any dark spot signals skin cancer, but that is not true. In fact, the change in color occurs when melanin, the natural brown pigment that determines your skin tone, deposits in excess in certain areas of your skin

Treatments For Severe Hyperpigmentation

If you have more serious forms of uneven skin tone here's a short list of available treatments:

  • Laser resurfacing - Normal laser skin resurfacing works by evaporating the first few layers of damaged skin to leave behind a fresh, evenly toned skin. Hydroquinone or mild chemical peels are often recommended before laser resurfacing for best results.
  • Intense Pulsed Light - IPL is a type of laser that leaves no scars, can sometimes heal freckles or other mild sun spots without using peels or hydroquinone creams beforehand.
  • Hydroquinone Creams - They bleach the skin by slowing down the production of melanin. Dark spots fade in a few weeks. They are usually used for hyper pigmentations which are not caused by hormonal changes.
  • Hydroxy Acid Peels - They increase cell renewal rate and correct hyperpigmentation marks. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are water soluble acids and can help remove hyperpigmentation, while Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) are lipid soluble acids and increase the rate of exfoliation but are not particularly known to remove hyperpigmentation.
  • Physician Formulas - These are more expensive skin pigmentation treatments but are very effective (Kinerase, Retin A, Renova, Avita etc).

Home Remedies and Spot Removal

Fresh Lemon Juice: Due to the fact that lemon juice has a high acid level, it's no surprise that it will help peel off layers of skin. This will either lighten or remove age spots completely if you rub it on your skin twice daily. It will probably take several weeks to see improvement, so you'll need to be dedicated and patient. Don't have lemons? Try red onions, they're known to produce the same results.
Exfoliation: Exfoliation removes dark surface cells to fade existing discolored pigmentation. Benefits include increased skin cell renewal which promotes softer skin, fades age spots, and helps even out skin tone. This technique can be done at home or by an esthetician.
Fade Creams: Available in most drug stores, fade creams are over-the-counter creams that contain bleaching agents to lighten spots. The best results are on those with naturally light skin. If your skin is dark, fade creams can make your dark spots even darker.
Skin Peels: This is a process in which acids and lasers work to remove deep layers of skin in an attempt to remove the age spots. You can find chemical peels for home use or go to a professional for a series of laser treatments.
Retinoids: The main ingredients in retinoids is vitamin A. Their job is to trigger growth of new cells, fading unwanted spots in the process. On the downside, retinoids can be too harsh for your skin, causing it to become dry and flaky.
Cover Them Up: Cosmetics, a girl's best friend. While you're waiting for your liver spots to fade, hide them with foundation or concealer. Need a more heavy-duty formula? There is special makeup available specifically for hiding spots or covering scars. If you don't want to spend the extra money, you can try regular, heavy-based products.
