Rose Hip Seed Oil is from the seeds of a native wild rose that grows in southern Chile. His curiosity guided him to investigate the effects of the substance on human skin, research what was in it and do clinical trials. He confirmed that the substance granted a scar free healing of wounds, cuts, scrapes and recovered the skin’s health after bruising done by cancer radiation therapies. He also discovered that the substance healed the skin even of chemical burns. The antibiotic agent of the snail’s serum is a glycoprotein whose molecular weight (MW) is about 160,000. Comp Biochem Physiol C. 1985; 82(2):345-8. The application of the cream to a zone afflicted by rosacea has surprisingly enhanced and diminished the symptoms of rosacea. Topical use has also helped to prevent outbreaks of rosacea symptoms in people that use it routinely on their face.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder described by 4 different clinical phases predominantly involving the central aspect of the face. The first evidence of rosacea is a persistent and severe vasodilation or flushing. In most people this condition advances to a vascular stage described by redness of the skin due to the congestion of the capillaries (erythema). Once triggered, it can persist for hours or days. Many people remain stable in this stage while some progress to an inflammatory stage characterized by a symmetrical array of papules and pustules in addition to the lasting erythema. This stage can often become a chronic condition. Some people, mainly males, can progress to the final stage characterized by swelling or a distinctive hyperplasia (abnormal increase in the quantity of cells), mainly of the cells on the nose.

Rosacea skin care commonly includes topical or oral antibiotics such as metranidazole and combinations such as sulfacetamide, sulfur, and azeliec acid. Nevertheless, these and other solutions for rosacea are all accompanied by several secondary effects. They are expensive and/or imply extended bothersome treatment. Dr. Richard Gallo, chief of dermatology, University of California, San Diego, and colleagues have lately concluded that a biological substance that is part of the body's innate immune system seems to play a role in producing the papules (bumps) and pustules (pimples) of rosacea. (Study funded by the National Rosacea Society (NRS) to discover potential causes and other key aspects of the disorder during the Fifth Annual Rosacea Research Workshop, 2004, held in association with the annual meeting of the Society for Investigative Dermatology).

He realized that the body produces peptides to protect itself from viruses, fungi and bacteria. He speculates that certain peptides called cathelicidins may be stimulated too easily in rosacea patients. The level of the defensive cathelicidins was 200 percent to 300 percent higher in rosacea patients. While many types of bacteria can stimulate the synthesis of cathelicidins, he stated that they seem to be specially sensitive to the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, which has been linked with rosacea in some researches.

The scientists have also realized that while the peptide is inactive when it first reaches the skin’s surface, enzymes in sweat cause it to become active. They confirmed that cathelicidins may trigger the synthesis of bumps and pimples in rosacea. This may possibly be in association with H. pylori and other bacterial triggers.

Interestingly enough the GAGs found in the snail’s mucus play a part in controlling the function and presence of those endogenous peptides and work as crucial defense molecules against rapidly dividing bacteria. This may help us understand so many testimonials from clients stating that they have erased or cut down the redness induced by rosacea or eczema by using the balm.

Control of Blood Vessel Proliferation in Rosacea.

According to Dr. Thiboutot, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a controller of blood vessel growth that can be associated to solar exposure, is highly present in the sebaceous glands of people with rosacea (Fifth Annual Rosacea Research Workshop, 2004). She noted that earlier research had found that VEGF can be implicated in the creation of visible blood vessels in rosacea, and that rosacea patients may therefore be especially sensitive to sunlight exposure.

In a further study, scientists found that neuropeptides -- substances produced by neurones or other cells in the skin -- and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation (found in sunlight) seem to stimulate the release of VEGF. Dr. Richard Granstein, director of dermatology at Cornell University, informed that tiny amounts of UVB, a type of ray that causes sunburn, seems to boost the release of VEGF in endothelial cells -- that is, cells that line blood vessels.

In addition, UVB caused an increase in interleukin 8, which plays a part in inflammation. The peptide somatostatin, however, had an inhibiting effect on interleukin and on VEGF synthesis in certain skin cells called keratinocytes. The relation to rosacea is still being studied.

Research done in 2003 showed that in the culture of human vascular endothelial cells, snail GAGs at 10 and 100 micro g ml(-1) impeded VEGF-induced capillary tube generation. These findings suggest that the inhibitory effect of the snail GAGs on the creation of new capillary networks from pre-existing blood vessels is because of the inhibition of excessive VEGF-induced vascular tube creation without altering its production. This may explain reports of some rosacea patients that have found comfort by applying the balm twice a day on afflicted areas and others who have applied it to prevent future rosacea outbreaks.

Heals Dermatitis Caused by Exposure to Ionizing Radiotherapy for Cancer – Radiodermatitis. An in depth research conducted in Spain, in 2000 and 2001, studied the effects of snail mucins in topical treatment of radiodermatitis, and confirmed the presence of antioxidants and the activity of the fibroblast growth factor in the snail secretion and its wonderful results to prevent and treat radiodermatitis when administrated to patients undergoing ionizing radiation therapy for the control of cancerous cells.

Results showed the presence of antioxidant effects in the snail's secretion: enzymatic as in superoxide dismutase (SOD), conjugation enzymes like glutathione-S-transferase and low molecular weight antioxidants. The antioxidant properties of the secretion can inhibit or weaken the proliferation of free radicals which can end the domino effect of spreading cellular activities.

The observation also showed, without a doubt, the presence of Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGB) in properties with a cell shielding function. The secretion improves cellular activity and the natural regenerative processes of the skin matrix, making skin healthier and stronger.
